Old N’ Busted
The new hotness in the land of blender are geometry nodes; the ability to create a sort of visual code, a flowchart that is used to algorithmically generate geometry. It is a bit convoluted and complex and requires that you understand a bit about the underlaying mechanics and mathematics behind 3D. Although you don’t need to perform any vector algebra or matrix math, you do need to understand that it is happening behind the scenes, and how you can tap into it to achieve all sorts of fancy and intriguing visuals. Geometry nodes are extremely powerful when used correctly.
In this case though, I just wanted to make a neat effect using the old tricks of modifiers, materials, animation and compositing. There’s no fancy math going on here, just a bunch of compositing hacks and a few mangled modifiers for interesting effect.
