About me
I’m an independent freelance 3D artist, primarily working with blender, with a private studio in Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
I’m a private person and I like to keep to myself. But I’ll try to lay out a half decent page here.
I enjoy working with things that are a little bit retro, a little bit strange, a little bit exaggerated or hyperreal. I enjoy taking on and tinkering with a wide variety of projects, always experimenting and trying new things. I’m not entirely a fan of modern design principals, which can often rely heavily on templates, easily replicated art, and efficiency over quality. I like to dedicate myself to everything that I do.
Naturally I’m not a huge user or advocate for AI generated artwork.
Besides art, I also sometimes enjoy writing up some code and fiddling with my keyboards and synths. I’m also a linux user and medium-sized open source enthusiast, albeit maybe not a complete evangelical. I’ll prefer an open source, community driven project wherever it’s realistic, but sometimes you need to bite the bullet and go for whatever is practical.
My tech stack looks something like this:
-
Blender for 3D art, of course.
- About a million or so plugins, but especially:
- Hard-Ops and Boxcutter
- Machin3tools
- Cablerator
- Sanctus Material Library
- QuadRemesher
- Etc. etc.
-
Plasticity - CAD and nurbs based 3D modelling
-
Substance Painter - texture painting
-
3D coat - maybe not so much now.
-
Zbrush - as above.
-
Krita as my paint app, along with my personal idiosyncratic ‘1-bit’ pixel art addon.
-
Aseprite for more formal, proper pixel art experiments
-
Bitwig as my music DAW of choice, something like an ableton knockoff.
-
Inkscape
-
Affinity Studio
-
Davinci Resolve
-
VS Codium
-
Godot Opensource Game Engine
For linux, I’m comfortable with either Arch or Debian derivatives. I’ve contributed some fixes and things to the Linux Mint project, which I strongly recommend for anyone who wants to try linux out- it’s a great beginner distro.
I could talk all day about this stuff, so I’ll cut it short rather than go into more and more detail. If you have any questions about anything at all, feel free to shoot me a line at md@homonkulos.studio
